Durata: 22 mins

Descrizione: (Reel 1) The series uses dramatised symbols to cover gaps in its actuality material. It opens, as do all the episodes, with a brief scene of an actress portraying 'Justice', blindfold with scales and sword. Next a mailed fist crumpling a treaty. A news placard announcing the war fades to a second actress portraying 'War' with two huge dogs. In an acted scene a middle-class family receives news of the outbreak while seated at breakfast. As the daughter consoles the mother, the father encourages the two sons to join the fight. Telephonists transmit the mobilisation order. At sea is HMS Princess Royal. 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron is at anchor at Rosyth. British troops disembark in France in August 1914 (note what appears to be a 13-pounder 9cwt A anti-aircraft gun, introduced 1918). Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery and Transport disembark. More transport ships are escorted by destroyers across the English Channel. The battle cruiser squadron at sea. The 'family' says its farewells as 'War' smiles slowly. (Reel 2) The Guards Division (?) marches "singing Tipperary", contrasted with dead soldiers. HMS King Edward fires a broadside. The submarine E23 on patrol. Members of the Chinese Labour Corps unload stockpiles of supplies and shells in a railyard. A troop of Royal Horse Artillery practises high-speed manoeuvres. A squadron of 18th Hussars (?) on patrol. A 4.5-inch howitzer fires from cover. "And so began the thunder of the guns which did not cease for four and a half years." The episode ends with a brief trailer for next week's episode.
A thematic, almost allegorical, account of Britain at the outbreak of the First World War.
